"There are so many opportunities in the Philadelphia area. Internships are a great way for college students to build a professional network locally," said Jon Grabelle Herrmann, executive director of Campus Philly.
Herrmann works to increase the number of Philadelphia employer recruitment opportunities for local students. "We promote local jobs and internships on our website and in partnership with each school's career office." Dating back to his time as an event promoter while a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Herrmann has worked with Philadelphia's Commerce Department to help encourage students to connect to Philadelphia and stay here after graduation.
Campus Philly is a non-profit organization working together with Philadelphia colleges, businesses, and public institutions connecting students to a "greater" Philadelphia. The Campus Philly team also reaches out to student life organizations making them aware of social and community events.
Campus Philly offers several internship programs to college students. "Internship opportunities are currently available in our Marketing Department, Website Design Department and Business Department," he said. "Applications are accepted year round directly through the CampusPhilly.org website."
Students from the Philadelphia area schools are encouraged to apply for these internships. "We do accept students throughout the region who are going for college credit or some paid positions." Current interns are from local schools such as St. Joseph's University, Temple, Drexel and University of Pennsylvania.
"Interns at Campus Philly can expect to learn time management, work with a devoted team in a fast paced environment, enhance computer skills, learn new things about the city and let other students know about what Philadelphia has to offer" he said.
"Each intern works on specific projects tailored to meet their particular needs", says Herrmannn. "For example, our marketing intern writes for the website www.campusphilly.org, plans events, visits schools promoting Campus Philly and encourages students to sign up for Campus Philly newsletter."
Campus Philly hosts several events throughout the year while partnering with organizations to support their events. The most popular event is the Campus Philly Kick-Off. Thousands of students attended the 2007 event connecting with local schools and area nonprofits.
"Ultimately our goal is to have employers reach out to local talent," says Herrmann. "Students have a vested interest in the city, and we like to see students get the most out of it."
